WordPress Running Super Slow On GoDaddy Hosting – Now Fixed

by Harlan Yee on March 18th, 2011

This is just a quick post to let you know that The Render Q is running at normal speed now. I know I’ve probably lost a lot of visitors due to the slow load times from this site. It has been a problem for a few months now and it not only affected you, the visitor but also the administrator side of my site.

I have 2 sites on GoDaddy shared hosting and both were unbearably slow. Writing a blog post and clicking on anything took so much time! I had to wait for each page to load and I kept getting server errors when saving posts.

I didn’t have anything special running on these sites, nothing that I thought would slow my site down this much. For a few weeks, I was researching other hosts and planning on moving my sites.

These were the load times for The Render Q yesterday:

  • 44 seconds – for admin login page to load
  • 2 minutes 15 seconds – from admin login to fully loaded WP dashboard
  • 1 minute 22 seconds – to load homepage after typing URL into my browser

Solution

So I called up GoDaddy support and explained the problem. The support guy was very nice, and was able to see the same slowness I was experiencing. I told him I had already tried a lot of the solutions I found on the internet like disabling plugins and things like that. He ran tests on both my websites and then finally recommended that I switch my hosting server to their 4GH servers. 4GH stands for 4th Generation Hosting.

He said eventually, every GoDaddy customer will be migrated to 4GH so I said “Let’s Do It”! He said to wait 48 hours before I do anything major with my sites because that’s how much time it’ll take for the transition to be completed. I didn’t do anything else with my sites that day.

The next day, I found that my sites were running fast again! The site is now loading at the speed I would expect and have not experienced any more delays. If you’re on GoDaddy hosting and experiencing slow WordPress load times, give them a call and request to be migrated right away to their 4GH hosting. It doesn’t cost anything and my payment terms all stayed the same.

  1. Great post… I’ve been having the same issue on my blog http://www.headhuntingpro.com and I called them, asked to be upgraded to 4th Generation Hosting, and VOILA… 1 hour later and it’s working like a treat.

Sounds great! Glad it’s working out for you.

  3. I switched over a month ago and it is still sllllooooowwwww. during the day it is almost impossible to log onto the site then at about 10:30pm it runs fine. I called godaddy to day and of course you get the stander BS oh there is no excessive load on the servers right now. Try using super cache. I told her that super cache messed up my site and I will not use it. When you have 3400 other sites on the same servers its gonna get slow. I am beginning to thik that is is a flaw in WP. the reason I think this is if you google any hosting company and then type wordpress slow everyone of them have issues with WP.

  4. I’ve had similar trouble over the last month with my WordPress install becoming painfully slow.

Just switched to 4gh on the control panel… Hope it fixws my problems, too.

  5. Thanks for this. I have/had 2 sites hosted on GoDaddy, with multiple slowness problems for months–or not coming up at all. I switched one (http://maryclove.com) to WebHostingHub and it’s working great. Plus, the support folks there were among the nicest I ever encountered.

I was ready to switch the 2nd site over, but it can get tricky for someone like me who isn’t well versed in these matters. So, I decided to give godaddy one more look, and then happened upon your blog entry–which raised my hopes.

I just called and they are switching it to the 4G (after giving me a little bit of the usual song and dance.) It could take up to 72 hours and there may be a down period, but that’s fine since I haven’t launched this one yet (wasn’t confident about its performance). I’m keeping my fingers crossed because I would really rather not muck with the transfer just yet. The site is http://www.columbiadogsonthego.com/classifieds

I’m hoping yours is continuing to run well.
    Wish me luck . . . !

  6. P.S. I forgot to mention that both site were WordPress sites.

  7. Just migrated mine cause my site was running super slow every time I posted a new post. Thanks!

    Hi Chris,

Hopefully it’ll work out for you. My sites started running back to normal speeds the next day. If I start experiencing these problems again, I’ll probably switch to Hostgator.

    Hi Mary,

Hopefully the site you migrated is running smoothly now. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when everyone is eventually switched to GoDaddy 4GH. I just hope that the same slowness problem won’t show up again!

    Hi Shevonne,

It’s great that you migrated to 4GH! Certainly easier than moving entire sites to another hosting company. I’m getting ready to add some more sites to my GoDaddy Deluxe account now because I’m happy with the 4GH.
