Niche Site Duel 2 – Choosing A Product To Promote
In the first post of this series, I announced that I joined the Niche Site Duel with the goal of getting a website to the first page of Google and generating income by selling an affiliate product. My first step is to identify my interests and select a product(s) I want to sell. The choices are many like the lanterns seen below with different designs on them making them each unique!
I have no particular method that I’m following, however, just today, I listened to Pat’s podcast with Glen Allsopp from ViperChill about his process of creating a niche site. One of the things he states is that sometimes he’ll find a product from a website he likes or has purchased from. I’ve never used Clickbank or Commission Junction so instead of searching there, I checked some websites and companies that I’m familiar with for affiliate programs. I came up with 3 companies that I’ve had direct contact with or used their product in the past that offer affiliate programs.
Products I Considered
- The first product comes from a company that has a service which allows users to create utterly amazing looking slideshows from your digital photos and short video clips. The best thing about it is that anyone can easily create high quality slideshows with their service! I have great interest in what they do because I produce professional video for a living and it literally removes the most time-consuming part of creating a slideshow… the editing. The CFO of this company is actually a friend of mine and I can probably get some good detailed info for content for my site.
- The second product is from a company that conducts background checks on people. I’ve worked with them in the past on some video projects. They’re on my list because I own a rental house and need to do background checks on new tenants from time to time. When I worked with them before, I seem to recall some very interesting facts about how they gather information about people which could be used as content if I choose this as my affiliate product.
- The third product is a piece of software used to help restore your computer’s hard drive with an archive stored on an external drive. I used this software before to recover from a virus that got on my laptop. It was fantastic! My laptop was restored to my utmost satisfaction! I have friends that use and love this software so this product is definitely worth exploring!
I feel comfortable in my options and the potential of these 3 products because I have an interest in all of them and because I’ve either used them or have had contact with those companies.
My Chosen Product To Promote
I took each product and decided which one I felt I had more expertise in and which one I could write more articles about. I eliminated the last two products because I feared that my interest might die out and eventually so would my website. So I chose the slideshow service as my affiliate product. The company is called Animoto.
I still remember when my friend Nate left for New York to help launch Animoto three years ago. If you want to see Nate in his hilarious 5 Word Acceptance speech at the 2009 Annual Webby Awards, go the end of this old blog post from my site.
Over the past year, I’ve been trying to come up with ideas on how to make money from their service. Now that I’m in this challenge, I really started doing my homework and I was able to come up with plenty of ideas to build a website around. Plus Animoto’s website actually gave me specific ideas to help pin down a marketable use for their product. I didn’t think I could just market photo slideshows in general and successfully compete online so here begins my journey of learning the techniques and skills of building a niche site.
Join me in Part 3 as I begin keyword research and where I venture into uncharted territory as far as my online reseach goes. See ya then!
